Lindisfarne is recognised as a "Ramsar Site", a wetland of international significance.
The saltmarshes and sand dunes around Holy Island are teeming with wildlife. The tidal mudflats provide the ideal habitat for birds, some of which travel from thousands of miles away. English Nature ensures these visitors are protected enabling bird watchers and nature lovers to enjoy the vast variety of species. Come the Autumn the reserve is visited by six internationally important species of wildfowl and wading birds who overwinter in a safe environment. They include, Pale Bellied Brent Geese, Greylag Geese, Wigeon, Grey Plovers, Bar Tailed Godwits and Redshanks.
The sand dunes are also home to a huge variety of wild flowers, butterflies and insects. You will find Nature Trail on the island which is marked with posts describing all of the natural and man made attractions of this beautiful island. It is only 5km/3miles long and you can spend as long as you like taking in the sights.
We have our very own bird hide along the shore from the Lookout - perfect for spending hours watching over the wetlands. |
